** Internet Users vs. Reno -- the Fight to Protect the Net **
1. WELCOME TO THE CIEC MEMBERS DISTRIBUTION LIST!
Welcome to the Citizens Internet Empowerment Coalition members distribution
list. This is a one-way list designed to keep CIEC members informed on the
status of the legal challenge to the Communications Decency Act. The list
is intended for CIEC members only.
On behalf of all CIEC members, CDT would like to thank you for joining the
Coalition. You are literally a part of history. The legal challenge to the
CDA will likely determine both the future of the Internet as a viable means
for free expression, education, and commerce, an the fate of free
expression in the Information age.
2. THE COALITION CONTINUES TO GROW!
Over 2330 Individual Internet Users have joined CIEC as of 5:30 pm ET Wed
2/28. The coalition is growing at a steady rate of 100 per hour. Thanks to
everyone who has already joined. You can find out more by visiting the
CIEC home page (URL below).
3. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
February through April promise to be busy months for the CIEC. The
preliminary schedule for the court challenge is as follows:
Feb. 26, 1996 -- CIEC Files Complaint in Philadelphia Federal Court.
March 1, 1996 -- CIEC to file request for Preliminary Injunction against the
Communications Decency Act
March 15, 1996 -- Government will file reply to CIEC P.I. Request
March 21 - 22, -- Evidentiary Hearing for Plaintiffs (i.e.. live witnesses).
Both the CIEC and ACLU cases will be heard together on
these
dates.
April 11 - 12 -- Hearing in which Government presents its side of case,
including witnesses and any other evidence.
A decision will be announced by the court sometime after mid-April.
Regardless of who wins this first round, there will be an immediate appeal
to the Supreme Court.
